Celebrating 75 Years of Water Fluoridation

The ADA (American Dental Association) recently came out with a news article honoring the 75th anniversary of community water fluoridation. Eight Chief Dental Officers of the former US Public Health Services came out with a letter of support for the program on July 7th. All eight offers are also retired rear admirals for the US Public Health Service. From the letter:

"Now we celebrate 75 years of CWF in the United States, described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century (along with vaccination, recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard, control of infectious diseases, and others)."

The fluoridation of public-use water has been seen as a breakthrough for public health and a leading example of how best to serve communities via a modernized approach to water infrastructure. Fluoride helps us - particularly when we're young -to develop stronger teeth through changing the chemical structure of our teeth from the inside out. When used via toothpaste it acts as a strengthener on the outside of our teeth as well. This initiative is still relatively new within the United States and its impacts are being felt today. It has lead to lower incidences of cavities and stronger teeth. It's one of the hallmarks of preventative dental care and a transformative effort towards democratizing our water resources in the United States . So the next time you look at tap water - think about all the fluoride benefits you could be getting!
